New star names

The following star names have been adopted by the International Astronomical Union since the book went to press:

  • The Marshallese name Arin-Majlep was adopted in June 2026 as the internationally recognized name for ε Aql. (See p. 394)
  • The name Kautoki, recorded on Kapingamarangi, was adopted in June 2026 as the internationally recognized name for ζ1 Lyr. (See p. 298)
  • The name Pongaponga, recorded on Pukapuka, was adopted in June 2026 as the internationally recognized name for ε1 Lyr A. (See p. 321)
Updated regional names

In August 2026, the Republic of Nauru officially became the Republic of Naoero. (See pp. 467, 561)

  • p. 120, §33. The stars between the two black shining roads (celestial tropics), used for navigation, here called “the stars that fix land” (Nā Hōkū paʻa o ka ʻāina), are clearly the same as “the stars that eat land” (Nā Hōkū ʻai ʻāina) mentioned in §23 above.
Originals of foreign-language quotes
  • p. 268, paragraph 1. The original quote from Barthel (1962: 1) is:
    • “Im Leprosarium der Osterinsel hat sich ein Wissen erhalten, das auf eine Gruppe alter Männer zurückzuführen ist, die dort wâhrend der ersten Dekaden unseres Jahrhunderts lebten. Das wertvolle Traditionsgut wurde von den Aussätzigen Arturo Teao und Gabriel Hereveri weitergegeben; ihre mündliche Uberlieferung hat im Jahre 1957 Mateo Hereveri in Hangaroa schriftlich fixiert und dankenswerterweise dem Verfasser zur Verfüngung gestellt.
